Big Duke has returned to racing in excellent form this time and remains a clear $1.85 favourite in 2017 Hobart Cup betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Cool Chap ($4) and leading local Geegees Goldengirl ($7.50).

Will Big Duke justify favouritism and win the Hobart Cup, or will one of his talented rivals claim an upset in the feature race?

Cool Chap ($4)

Cool Chap is a proven performer at the class and distance and arguably offers punters the best value for money at current Hobart Cup odds of $4. Posting three wins and a further eight minors through only fifteen competitive starts, the High Chaparral gelding announce himself to the Australian racing community through a smart autumn preparation in 2016, which was highlighted by a win in the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) and third in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m). Drawn ideally in barrier 6, Cool Chap will be partnered by Kerrin McEvoy and has been charged with carrying only 54kgs.

Geegees Goldengirl ($7.50)

Geegees Goldengirl has posted a number of standout results at the Hobart course and is another runner that is sure to excel under the conditions of Sunday’s race. Claiming eight wins and a further thirteen minors through thirty-two careers starts, the Wordsmith mare took a few runs to find form upon resuming this time, but will carry winning condition into the Hobart Cup after storming home to win the talent-rich Summer Cup (2200m) by close to four lengths on January 22nd. Sigrid Carr will take the ride on Geegees Goldengirl in the Hobart Cup.

Big Duke ($1.85)

Big Duke is yet to be tested at a mile and a half and he is simply two short at his current 2017 Hobart Cup odds to warrant a win bet. Having started his racing career in Europe, Big Duke ran fourth in a Bendigo minor over 1500m first-up on November 24th before a smart performance on-pace for second in the Yarramalong Racing Club BM70 (1600m). Having since posted comfortable wins in each of the Dennis Hanrahan BM78 (1800m) and Schweppes Sparling BM78 (2040m), Big Duke is weighted well and will be partnered by Brenton Avdulla.
