Garud Primed for 2015 Hobart Cup

February 9th, 2015

Having returned to racing in competitive form this time in, leading jockey Craig Williams is confident Garud is more than capable of returning to the winner’s circle in Monday’s Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) in Tasmania.

Running a credible third in the Lola’s Gift Handicap (1400m) first-up on December 13th, Garud returned to the winner’s circle in the Woodford Cup (1700m) on December 28th before a luckless run for sixth in the Piping Lane Handicap (2000m) last time out on January 21st.

Having taken out the Hobart Cup on four previous occasions, including the most recent edition aboard Epingle, Williams told AAP Garud is no sure thing for success this afternoon, but would not take the ride on any of his competitors ahead of the seven-year-old.

“It’s been a lucky race for me,” Williams said.

“Garud has got no weight, but he has drawn awkwardly.

“The Tasmanian horses have to be respected, they’ve been racing competitively and it’s in their backyard, but it looks like Garud has the right form to be extremely competitive.”

Charged with carrying just 54kgs in the 2015 Hobart Cup, trainer Mike Moroney is confident Garud is in the right form to overcome the somewhat wide and awkward barrier 10 and win.

“I think it’s the right race for him but he just hasn’t been blessed with the best draw,” Moroney said.

“A good draw would have been ideal for him over 2400 metres because he just needs a bit of cover.

“He’s done a lot of work going into this.

“I felt I made a bit of a blue last start in that I might have been a bit light on him, work-wise, so I’ve stepped the work rate up and he’s handled it really well.

“With luck in running I think he’ll be pretty hard to beat.”

Securing four wins and a further 14 minor places over his 31 start career so far, Garud began his racing career abroad in Britain before transferring to the care of Moroney at the conclusion of 2011.
