The richest race at the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival, the $300,000 Group 3 Hobart Cup (2200m), took place at Hobart Racecourse on Sunday February 13 and Sydney raider Bid Spotter claimed an upset win.
It was the sixth year in a row that a horse from interstate scored victory in the Hobart Cup.
After jumping away well from barrier four and getting a nice clear run, the Graeme Rogerson-trained Bid Spotter ($14.90) and jockey Michael Rodd went wide on the straight and stormed home in a career best win for the Redoute’s Choice five-year-old.
The official 2011 Hobart Cup result was Bid Spotter ($14.90) a half-length winner over local runner Organised ($18) and Davon ($19.30) a half-length away again in third.
After having the run of the race from the inside alley along the rails, dual Country Cups winner Red Buttons ($7.10) finished fourth one place ahead of race favourite Dream Pedlar ($5.70) in fifth.
The Hobart Cup victory bought Bid Spotter’s career record up to six wins from 26 starts for over $437,000 in prize money earned.
The $225,000 Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) on Wednesday February 23 is next on the agenda for Bid Spotter who has dual Group glory in Tasmanian in their sights.
